The 7-Minute Cyber Health Check Every Business Should Do Monthly

A quick, practical way for Mid North Coast business owners to spot risks before they become expensive problems.

Most business owners in Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Wauchope, Laurieton and the Mid North Coast are busy running their business — not managing IT. That’s completely understandable.

However, our account managers see the same pattern every week: businesses that haven’t checked their cyber health for months (sometimes years) suddenly face a costly breach, ransomware attempt, or major downtime.

The good news? You don’t need to be an IT expert to stay on top of your cyber security.

This simple 7-Minute Cyber Health Check is designed for busy owners and managers to run once a month.

Your 7-Minute Cyber Health Check

Set a reminder in your calendar and spend just 7 minutes doing the following:

1. Are all your computers and laptops fully updated? Check Windows Update / macOS Update. Make sure no devices are showing “updates available” or “pending restart”.

2. Is your antivirus / security software active and up to date? Open your security program. Confirm real-time protection is on and definitions are current.

3. Have you had any suspicious emails this month? Quickly review your junk/spam folder and recent inbox. Note any unusual “invoice”, “payment”, or “urgent request” emails.

4. When was your last data backup? Check your backup system or cloud storage. Has it run successfully in the last 7 days? Do you know how to restore a file if needed?

5. Is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) turned on for all important accounts? Email (Microsoft 365 / Gmail), banking, and accounting software should all have MFA enabled.

6. Any strange computer behaviour lately? Slower than normal performance, unexpected pop-ups, or files you can’t open? These can be early warning signs.

7. Who has access to your systems? Quickly review who has admin rights or can access sensitive data. Are any ex-employees or contractors still able to log in?

Scoring:

  • 6–7 Yes = Good job — you’re ahead of most small businesses.
  • 3–5 Yes = Some gaps exist — you have moderate risk.
  • 0–2 Yes = High risk — action is needed now.

Why Running This Check Monthly Matters

Small issues that take 2 minutes to fix today can become $5,000–$50,000+ problems next month.

Regular checks help you catch vulnerabilities early.

However, even if you do this check every month, it’s still reactive. You’re only seeing what you can spot manually.
